INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES
FOR MORE DRIVING PLEASURE.

Every BMW is fitted with BMW EfficientDynamics technologies, for example the Auto Start Stop function, Brake Energy Regeneration or Electric Power Steering. Intelligent energy management means the interplay of all technologies ensures sustainable mobility today.

ECO PRO MODE.

  • Challenge: Economical driving without constant self-regulation.
  • Solution: Efficiency at the touch of a button and tips for even more economical driving.
  • The benefit to you: Less consumption and a bonus range you can read right away.
How it works

Save fuel at the touch of a button

Activating the ECO PRO Mode via the Driving Experience Control reprograms the transmission and air conditioning system for efficiency and the display shows tips for economical driving.

Efficiency with foresight

Anticipatory tips aid efficient driving through optimal use of kinetic energy (in the BMW 7
Series with the latest generation of Navigation system Professional).

Possible savings via gliding

The engine is disconnected and the vehicle 'glides' if the driver stops accelerating at speeds between 50 to 160 km/h and doesn't brake (only in the BMW 7 Series with Automatic transmission).

The bonus range is shown on the Control Display.
This is the extra amount of kilometres you can travel thanks to the ECO PRO Mode.

    • Problem: Precious energy is wasted when braking.
    • Solution: This energy is used to recharge the battery.
    • The benefit to you: The dynamo does less work - consumption falls and performance increases.

ELECTRIC POWER STEERING.

  • Problem: Hydraulic steering systems waste energy because they work constantly.
  • Solution: Electric power steering that only goes to work when you move the steering wheel.
  • The benefit to you: The power steering consumes less energy and total consumption falls.

ECO PRO Mode.

Driving in ECO PRO Mode takes all the factors that influence fuel consumption into consideration and allows efficient driving at the touch of a button. As soon as the ECO PRO Mode is activated it optimises the systems that affect the drivetrain as well as the heating and air conditioning functions, and enables them to work at maximum efficiency. The Control Display shows which BMW EfficientDynamics measures are currently reducing fuel consumption, e. g. Brake Energy Regeneration or the optimised air conditioning.

ECO PRO Mode also gives the driver concrete tips for more efficient driving; for example, by showing him the most economical gear to use in each driving situation. Vehicles with automatic transmissions can also glide at speeds ranging from 50 to 160 km/h in ECO PRO Mode: when the driver takes his foot off the accelerator and doesn't brake the engine is disconnected from the drive train and the vehicle uses its own kinetic energy to move forward - with minimum consumption.

The built-in Navigation system Professional includes the Route-ahead assistant and ECO PRO function. The Route-ahead assistant uses navigation data to evaluate when it would be appropriate to change speed and when gliding is advisable. The ECO PRO route can be selected as an alternative to the quickest or shortest one once the destination has been entered into the navigation system. This always relates to the most economical route within the shortest amount of time, based on the driving style, traffic situation and route profile. Experience even greater savings with Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, which allows for more efficient acceleration from the initial speed when ECO PRO Mode is activated.

ECO PRO Mode calculates the total savings from all measures in kilometres and displays this bonus range on the on-board computer. The driver can then see the extra distance he was able to travel thanks to ECO PRO Mode. If he follows all the system's tips, he could save up to 20 %. An additional 5 % fuel consumption can be saved using the glide, Route-ahead assistant and ECO PRO Route functions (determined by an internal BMW consumption study).

Brake Energy Regeneration.

Kinetic energy is released as soon as the driver applies the brake or lets the vehicle coast. Brake Energy Regeneration transforms this into electrical energy and uses it to recharge the battery, so nothing goes to waste. Even at top acceleration, this supplies the engine with propulsive force that would normally be supplied by the generator in vehicles without Brake Energy Regeneration. The power the engine requires to charge the battery is thus reduced, resulting in lower consumption and emissions.

Electric Power Steering.

Conventional power steering systems use hydraulics and constantly draw power from the engine - even when the driver isn't moving the steering wheel. This wastes energy. With Electric Power Steering, an electric motor replaces the hydraulics and is only activated when the driver actually moves the steering wheel. If you don't move the steering wheel (on a straight, for example, or on a steady curve) the electric motor remains inactive and doesn't consume any energy. This reduces fuel consumption, while retaining the characteristic BMW dynamic driving experience.
